Herne Mill - managed and opened to the public by the Friends of Herne Mill

Welcome to the Herne Mill website

The latest in a long line of mills which have occupied the site for centuries, Herne Mill is a local landmark on the skyline above the ancient village of Herne in Kent.

It can be seen from the A299 Thanet Way which passes nearby; from the Thames Estuary where it is a ‘sea mark’ and from the countryside around.

Herne Mill is a Kentish smock windmill dating from 1789.
It is Grade I listed and is owned by Kent County Council
and cared for by the Friends of Herne Mill.

Opening times:
The mill is open to the public from Easter to the end of September on Sundays and Bank Holidays from 2:00pm to 5:00pm and on Thursdays in August from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.

Last admission is 4.30pm.

On National Mills Weekend (second weekend in May) and Heritage Weekend (second weekend in September) it is also open on Saturdays from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.

The mill is also open by appointment.

Admission: £1.00 / All adults, £0.25 / children (who must be in the care of a responsible adult).

Closed Season Workparties: From October to Easter, the Friends organise occasional workparties at the mill which are advertised in the Diary Section.

These are social opportunities as well as a chance to get involved in the mill maintenance (anything from cleaning to replacing curb teeth), learn how to operate the mill and how to act as a mill guide.

Membership of the Friends of Herne Mill: Yearly - £2.50 / adults, £1.00 / children. Membership gives free entry to the mill on open days, copies of the Friends' occasional newsletter 'Gleanings' and the opportunity to act as a volunteer at the mill.
